7 Reasons Why I Blur My Child’s Face

Personal experience

While traveling, we ended up in a country where fair skin and light eyes were uncommon. People were fascinated by my daughter’s features, which they’d only seen in movies. At the time she was just 18 months old and the constant attention was overwhelming. Everyone we met was super kind and curious, but it got to be too much. Hotel staff kept coming to our room after we checked in, just to get a look at her, until we had to ask for some privacy.

At the hotel restaurant, things got so overwhelming that she would hide in the curtains during meals. While it might seem harmless, I want to teach my daughter to assert her boundaries and feel comfortable saying no. It's all about finding that balance between respecting others’ curiosity and ensuring she feels safe and secure.

As a mom sharing our family's adventures online, I've decided to blur my child’s faces in our public posts and videos.

Here's why:

  1. Ensuring Safety

The internet can be a risky place. By keeping my daughter’s face blurred, I reduce the risk of her being recognized or tracked by strangers. It's a step I take to keep her safe from potential online threats.

  2. Protecting Her Privacy

Children have a right to privacy. By blurring her face, I help protect her personal identity and keep their private life out of the public eye. This way, her personal moments can still remain personal.

  3. Focusing on Valuable Content

I want our content to be valuable and meaningful, especially when it comes to raising my daughter. By not focusing on looks, I can highlight our experiences, lessons, and fun moments. It’s about sharing our journey and the real-life tips that can help other families.

  4. Preventing Exploitation

Images of children can sometimes be misused. By blurring their faces, I minimize the risk of their images being exploited or used inappropriately. With the rise of AI technology, images can be easily altered, further increasing the risk. It’s a precaution to ensure their safety and dignity.

  5. Preserving Future Autonomy

When my daughter grows up, she might not want their childhood photos widely available on the internet. Blurring her face respects their future autonomy, allowing her to decide what they want she wants to share about herself when she’s older.

  6. Controlling Her Digital Footprint

Once images are posted online, they can spread uncontrollably. By blurring her face, I maintain better control over her digital footprint, ensuring that her online presence is managed responsibly and respectfully.

  7. Complying with Legal Standards

In many places, there are laws and regulations protecting children's privacy and requiring consent for sharing their images. Blurring faces helps me comply with these legal requirements and protect my family from potential legal issues when traveling.

By blurring my daughter’s face, I aim to balance sharing our adventures with protecting her privacy and safety.

Thank you for understanding and supporting our journey!
