Night Snorkeling with Manta Rays in Hawaii
The Big Island of Hawaii isn’t just known for its volcanoes—the manta rays are known to feed on the coast of Kona and swimming with them is a bucket list experience you should add to your list!
Here’s everything you need to know about this bucket list activity, including tips, tricks, and how I did it for just $79.
The Experience
We booked our tour through My Kona Adventures, but here’s the hack: we found the tour on Groupon for just $79 (most tours typically range from $100-$150).
The adventure starts with a quick waiver and 10-minute boat ride from shore. Once you arrive at the snorkel site, you’ll jump into the water and hold onto a floating surfboard with lights underneath. The lights attract plankton, which, in turn, attract the manta rays.
You’re not really swimming—you’re floating on the surface, which makes this activity accessible for anyone comfortable in the water. You are in the water for 30ish minutes which is more than enough time to enjoy them flipping and turning all around you.
Manta Rays Look Scary… But They’re Gentle
I’ll be honest, when you first see a manta ray swooping beneath you, it can be a little unnerving. They’re huge—we saw some with wingspans up to 10-12 feet—and they glide so close it some may even touch you (some come close enough for a “kiss” as they turn!). As intimading as they look manta rays are harmless and even though they look like they can sting you its just their tail.
So take a deep breath, hold on to the board, and just enjoy the magic.
Make it stand out
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
What to Expect on the Tour
Signing a Waiver: Like most adventurous activities, you’ll sign a waiver beforehand. You have the opportunity here to rent a wetsuit top from the company for $5 which I highly recommend the water is cold!

Safety brief: There a quick safety brief on what to expect and how to stay safe during the tour and you can ask any questions you have on them here.
The Ride: A 10-minute boat ride takes you to the snorkel spot.
Wetsuits: The water at night can be chilly, so wear a wetsuit. Most tour companies provide them, but I recommend confirming beforehand.
Gear: You’ll be given a snorkel mask and pool noodle to put at your feet to float. I also suggest bringing a GoPro or waterproof camera—you’ll want to capture this.
The Manta Ray Show: Once in the water, you hold onto the floating surfboard while the manta rays glide beneath you, swooping and twirling as they feed on plankton.
Tips for Families
Most companies allow kids as young as 6 years old, though a few allow kids as young as 4. While I consider myself pretty adventurous, I would personally wait until closer to 6 years old for this experience. Here’s why:
The water can be cold, even with a wetsuit.
You’re floating, not swimming, which can be cold and tiring for younger kids.
The darkness and giant manta rays might feel overwhelming for little ones.
If you’re traveling with kids, make sure they’re comfortable in the water and check the company’s age requirements when booking.
Tips & Tricks for a Smooth Experience
Book Ahead: Tours fill up quickly, so reserve your spot in advance. Use Groupon to snag a deal like I did.
Wear a Wetsuit: It keeps you warm and comfortable in the chilly water.
Bring a GoPro: The footage you’ll capture is absolutely worth it.
Relax: Manta rays may look intimidating, but they’re peaceful creatures. Float, watch, and enjoy the show.
Stay Still: The calmer you are, the closer the rays will come.
Final Thoughts
Swimming with manta rays at night was truly one of the most unforgettable experiences of my life. They are absolutely incredible and surreal to see up close in person.
If you’re headed to the Big Island, add this to your bucket list—you won’t regret it. 🌊✨
